There are few nightmares more unexpected than moving into a home or apartment next to bad neighbors. Whether your neighbors are a wearying handful or they’re outright dangerous, there is no shortage of concern that can arise from their presence.

However, unfortunate neighbors don’t have to mean doom and gloom for your new home! Sometimes it just takes the right steps to turn bad neighbors into best friends (or at least congenial ones!).

Here are a few tips for what to do if you have problem neighbors:

  1. Let Yourself Adjust to the Situation

If you’ve just moved into a new home or apartment, it’s natural for your emotions to be all over the place. While you may want to rant about your bad neighbors as soon as you move in, it’s best to let yourself settle into the new space first.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid to Get to Know Your Neighbors

Even the friendliest of folks can give you a bad first impression. That is why it’s important to make an effort to meet and talk with your new neighbors as soon as possible. A brief conversation about nothing, in particular, can go a long way in improving your relationship.

  1. Chat with Your Landlord or Property Managers

You should only talk to your landlord or housing department about your neighbors if you feel unsafe, especially if they’re making noise late at night when you’re trying to sleep (or any time of day, for that matter).

If you live in your own home, you may have a Homeowner’s Association you can depend on to help you out!

  1. Seek Outside Help If Nothing Else Works

If you need to call the police on your neighbors or they are just making your life miserable, then they may be violating the terms of their lease.

For this reason, you can file a complaint with your landlord. You may also want to talk to the police or other municipal officials if the problem is serious enough that you feel uncomfortable on your property or even in your home.

Before you make a move, make sure to exhaust your options with your landlord and other relevant parties. You never know – a kind word can turn away all kinds of wrath!
